La fotografía del fotógrafo español Harry Fisch ha sido seleccionada en la Short List (9 mejores) de los  Sony World Photography Awards 2013  entre 122.000 participaciones de 170 paises.  En la Open competition, participaron 46.000 fotógrafos  y la foto fué seleccionada en el apartado "Low Light"

La selección se realiza en cuatro grupos, siendo cada uno de ellos representativo de un género fotográfico. Trás dos días de selecciones se crean de 7 a 10 finalistas por categoria defendiendo cada uno de los jueces sus selecciones en una mesa redonda.

Los Sony World Photography Awards:  Es el certamen de mayor reconocimiento global en el mundo de la fotografía. Iniciado en 2008 pretende descubrir los nuevos talentos en cada género fotográfico.

En esta ocasión los jueces fueron :

Catherine Chermayeff, (Director of Magnum Special Projects),
Andrew Sanigar (Comissioning Editor at Thames & Hudson),

The leading  French magazine was founded in 1949 and has published most of the best pictures ever appeared in the French press.  The magazine presents a slideshow where you can see the most important e-mails from National Geographic editor as well as some of Hary Fisch photographs.

 This photograph was taken at Asi Gaht, Varanasi, more or less 5:45 am. I usually stay next to this precise Gaht when in Varanasi. This said, I obviously know the place :-) . The extraordinary thing about the ghats is their tremendous transformation which lies on the level of the Ganges. On this opportunity - one month ago- the level was low and, unfortunately, the image, from the steps of the Gaht, was not very pleasant: mud, garbage, etc... I decided to go down, next to the Ganges.

            It did not take long to take the winning photograph of the National Geographic Photo 2012: one seventh of a second (1/7 s in photographic terms), almost the same time it took me to lose the prize. 

This is the story of how you can climb to the highest photographic peak and fall in only 72 hours. And why you should carefully read the rules of a contest...

Just landing from my last travel photography trip with Nomad Photo Expedition and  reading the posts , I saw one  from  National Geographic. I did not hurry to open it, it could probably be an add, or the acknowledgement of the photographs I had sent at the last minute to the contest. I have to confess that, to some extend, I got excited before opening it thinking that -why not?- I possibly could  have been selected on the top ten . ..

I opened  the mail and read:

           "Congratulations! ...... Your photo was Chosen as the winner of the Places      category for the 2012 National Geographic Photo Contest ...."

 Harry Fisch photograph "Preparing the prayers at the Ganges," has been chosen as the winner of the Places category for the 2012 National Geographic Photo Contest.

The picture was  later  disqualified as the organisation considered that the digital  removal of a bag on the right side of the frame was  in direct violation of the contest rules.

In words of National Geographic Senior Photo Editor , Monica C.Corocoran:

"..it is unfortunate you did not crop the bag out or just leave it in, as it really had no impact either way. But digitally removing anything from a photo is in direct violation of the contest and we must follow our own rules... "
